A raw powerlifting total tells you almost nothing about relative strength on its own โ a 600 kg total from a 140 kg lifter and the same 600 kg from a 74 kg lifter represent very different achievements. Bodyweight-adjusted scoring formulas like DOTS exist to solve exactly that problem: they convert a total into a single number that can be compared fairly across bodyweights and sexes.

1. What Is the DOTS Score?
DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) was derived by Tim Reinhoudt in 2019 and adopted by USA Powerlifting (USAPL) and the USPA as their official scoring standard for determining "best lifter" awards among non-master, raw/classic competitors. It replaced the older Wilks formula in these federations because it was fitted on more recent, more complete competition data and performs better across the full bodyweight spectrum โ particularly at the very light and very heavy ends, where Wilks was known to be biased.
2. The DOTS Formula, Explained
DOTS uses a bodyweight-dependent polynomial in the denominator, with separate coefficients for men and women:
Where Total is your squat + bench press + deadlift in kilograms, BW is bodyweight in kilograms, and AโE are five sex-specific constants fitted by regression to competition data. The polynomial curve is what allows a heavier lifter's total to be "discounted" appropriately relative to a lighter lifter's, instead of comparing raw totals directly.
Wilks, Wilks2, and IPF GL Points follow the same underlying idea โ a bodyweight-dependent normalizing factor multiplied by the total โ but each uses a differently-shaped curve (Wilks and Wilks2 use a 5th-degree polynomial; IPF GL uses an exponential curve) fitted to different datasets at different points in time, which is why the same lifter gets a slightly different number from each formula.

Here's a full calculation you can verify by hand, matching the calculator's defaults: a 90 kg male lifter with a 600 kg total (220 kg squat + 140 kg bench + 240 kg deadlift).
Step 1 โ DOTS: For men, A = โ307.75076, B = 24.0900756, C = โ0.1918759221, D = 0.0007391293, E = โ0.000001093. Evaluating the polynomial at BW = 90 gives a denominator of approximately 773.20. DOTS = 600 ร 500 รท 773.20 โ 388.0.

Step 3 โ Wilks (1994): Using the original six-term male coefficients in the same 500 รท polynomial structure (extended to a 5th-degree term) gives a Wilks score of approximately 383.0.
Step 4 โ Wilks2 (2020): Using the recalibrated 2020 coefficients in the same structure gives approximately 383.5 โ close to classic Wilks by design, since Wilks2 was a recalibration rather than a completely new model.

5. Which Federation Uses Which Formula
If you're prepping for a specific meet, use the formula your federation actually scores with โ the others are useful cross-checks, but only one number is official on the day:
- The IPF, and any national federation affiliated with the IPF โ currently Powerlifting America, not USA Powerlifting (USAPL left the IPF in November 2021 and now runs independently) โ use IPF GL Points.
- USAPL and USPA, for the general "best lifter" award โ DOTS. Masters (older) lifters typically have a separate age-adjusted coefficient applied on top, which this calculator does not include โ check with your federation for the exact masters coefficient.
- Powerlifting Australia and World Powerlifting โ Wilks2.
- Historical records and some smaller/legacy federations โ the original Wilks formula.
6. What Counts as a Good DOTS Score
There's no single official classification table โ different coaches and sites draw the lines slightly differently โ but here's a commonly cited reference scale for raw, drug-tested lifting:

- DOTS coefficients follow Reinhoudt's 2019 derivation, adopted by USA Powerlifting and USPA; formula, adoption, and the 40-210 kg (men) / 40-150 kg (women) validity range are as published on USA Powerlifting's own site.
- IPF GL Points coefficients follow the IPF's official GL formula, effective May 2020.
- Wilks and Wilks2 coefficients follow Robert Wilks' original 1994 formula and the March 2020 recalibration respectively.

As a general, widely-cited reference (not an official federation standard): for men, roughly 200 is novice, 300 is intermediate, 400 is advanced, and 500+ is elite. For women, roughly 150 is novice, 250 is intermediate, 325 is advanced, and 400+ is elite. Exact thresholds vary by source and by federation.
All four adjust a powerlifting total for bodyweight so lifters of different sizes can be compared fairly, but they use different formulas fitted to different datasets. DOTS (2019, adopted by USAPL/USPA) and IPF GL (2020, official IPF formula) are the two most commonly used today.
